19 Laws Enacted To Regulate Electrical Appliances, Renewable Energy Products

The Parliament of Ghana has enacted 19 new laws to regulate the markets for electrical appliances and renewable energy products.

The enactments affect clothe washing machines, rice cookers, industrial fans, computers, set-top boxes, ventilating fans, solar panels, microwave ovens, storage water heaters, renewable energy batteries.

It also affects public lighting, television sets, Improved Biomass Cookstoves, electric kettles, electric motors, air conditioners, Distribution Transformers, comfort fans and inverters.

The regulations were passed in November 2022 and will be enforced after one year, the Energy Commission said in a statement posted by the Ghana Shippers Authority.

The Commission said it caused Parliament to pass this into law under its mandate under Act 541.

Importers have been urged to take notice of the development and act accordingly.

“To ensure effective implementation of the Regulations and protect the livelihoods of persons in the electrical appliances and the renewable energy products markets, the Regulations provide for a transitional period of one year for the market to adjust.”

Significance
Per the statement, the laws will prevent Ghana from becoming a desirable destination for new but substandard and used appliances; save the economy by reducing electricity demand which necessitates additional generation capacity with its associated fuel cost.

They will also protect the environment and safeguard the health of citizens from air pollution caused by increased power generation; and protect the consumer from purchasing unsuitable appliances and the payment of unnecessarily high electricity bills.
