Police Intercept 2,213 Slabs of Suspected Indian Hemp on River Volta
The Tema Regional Police Command has intercepted a total of 2,213 slabs of dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp on the River Volta at Tuanikopey Island.
The interception was carried out by the Marine Police Detachment at Ada.
In a press release dated September 18, 2026, and signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Tema, ASP Dede Dzakpasu, the Police said the operation occurred on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at about 12:45 a.m. during a routine patrol on the river.
According to the Police, an outboard-powered wooden canoe containing twenty-nine (29) sacks of the suspected narcotic substance was spotted. Upon sighting the Police, the occupants of the canoe abandoned it and fled.
A search conducted on the canoe revealed twenty-nine sacks containing 2,213 slabs of dried leaves wrapped in yellow cellotape.
The Police also found fourteen 25-litre gallons on board, twelve of which contained pre-mixed fuel, and two Yamaha outboard motors, one 40HP and the other 30HP.
The suspected narcotic substances have since been conveyed to the Ada District Police Headquarters, while arrangements are underway to convey the outboard motors and the pre-mixed fuel to the station for further investigation.
The Tema Regional Police Command says efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the persons who abandoned the canoe and its contents.
The Command has cautioned the public against engaging in the trafficking and transportation of narcotic substances and is urging anyone with information on the owners or occupants of the abandoned canoe to report to the nearest Police station or provide such information to assist in the ongoing investigation.
