Gender Minister Urges Media Women to Champion Affirmative Action Implementation

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has urged women in the media to play a leading role in championing the effective implementation of the Affirmative Act (Gender Equity) Act, 2024 (Act 1121)
She made the call at a capacity-building engagement organised by the Gender Equity Committee Secretariat of the Ministry for Women in the Media on Thursday, 17th September 2026 in Accra.
The engagement sought to deepen participants’ understanding of the Act and strengthen collaboration towards its effective implementation.
The Minister noted that the media plays an important role in shaping public opinion and national discourse, stressing that implementation of the Act should go beyond legislation to produce tangible outcomes for women and girls.
She also called for sustained public education to encourage greater participation of women in leadership and decision-making, particularly in elected positions, where participation is subject to electoral timelines.
The Chief Director of the Ministry, Dr Marian Kpakpah, said women in the media could help bring the Act closer to citizens through accurate and gender-responsive reporting, informed public discussion and increased visibility for women in leadership.
The Chair of the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN), Dr Charity Binka, also encouraged women to embrace leadership opportunities and support other women to advance in leadership and national development.
The engagement featured a presentation on the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024 (Act 1121), focusing on its key provisions, implementation framework and stakeholder responsibilities. This was followed by a panel discussion on the theme, “Beyond the Headlines: Female Media Practitioners’Role in Implementing the Act to Drive Accountability and Institutional Change.” The discussion focused on gender-responsive reporting, increasing the visibility of women in leadership, challenging gender stereotypes and educating the public on the importance of gender equality.
The engagement ended with a commitment to strengthen collaboration among the Ministry, the media and stakeholders to support the effective implementation of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024 (Act 1121).
