GES Warns SHS Heads Over Unauthorised Charges

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has warned Heads of Senior High Schools to stop imposing unauthorised charges on parents and compelling them to purchase items directly from schools.

In a directive dated September 18, 2026, and signed by the Deputy Director-General (MS), Prof. Smile Dzisi (Mrs.) for the Director-General, the GES said it had received reports that some heads were compelling parents and guardians to buy items such as trunks, chop boxes, uniforms, cutlasses and other personal effects directly from the schools.

“Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has received reports of some Heads of Senior High Schools imposing unauthorised charges on parents and guardians and compelling them to purchase items such as trunks, chop boxes, uniforms and cutlasses and others directly from the schools,” the letter stated.

The Service has directed all Heads of Schools to immediately desist from such practices and ensure strict compliance with approved guidelines on admission of students and student requirements.

The GES warned that any Head of School found imposing unauthorised charges or compelling parents to purchase items through the school shall face severe administrative sanctions in accordance with GES regulations.

Regional Directors have been instructed to communicate the directive to all Heads of Senior High Schools and Senior High Technical Schools for strict compliance.
