Transparency International Calls For Enquiry Into Death Of Aljazeera Correspondent

Global movement Transparency International has issued a statement calling for a swift and transparent probe into the shootings at two correspondents of Aljazeera resulting in the death of one.

On May 11, 2022 while covering Israeli raids in the city of Jenin, the two, a Palestinian-American Shireen Abu Akleh and Ali Samoudi were shot at, leading to the death of Shireen.

Reports indicate that Shireen was shot in the head while Ali was shot in the back.

Reacting to this, Transparency International said the perpetrators must face consequences while concrete steps must be taken to protect all journalists reporting on violence in occupied territories.

It is of the firm view that “A free, independent and safe media are essential to report on wrongdoing, corruption and violence. Reporters are a critical ally to hold power to account. Yet no one has been held responsible for 81 per cent of journalist murders in the last 10 years. We cannot allow this to happen to Shireen Abu Akleh.”
