AU Deputy Chair Hails Ghana’s Preparation For Mahama Chairmanship as Blueprint For Continent

The Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Ambassador Selma Malika Haddadi, has commended Ghana for completing preparations for President John Mahama’s upcoming AU Chairmanship in 2027 six months ahead of schedule, describing it as a blueprint for the continent.

She gave the commendation during a meeting with Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on the margins of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Disclosing this in a Facebook post, Mr. Ablakwa said the meeting was forward-looking and substantive, focusing on Ghana’s priorities when President Mahama assumes the AU Chair.

“Our discussions focused on Ghana’s priority areas when President John Mahama assumes the Chair of the African Union as contained in Ghana’s AU Chairmanship Strategy Document which was commissioned by President Mahama,” he stated.

He said the two sides also reviewed the state of the AU and President Mahama’s vision for attaining Agenda 2063.

On reparatory justice, Mr. Ablakwa said Ghana and the AU have agreed to strengthen collaboration to provide greater impetus and continental solidarity, following the Ghana-led UN resolution declaring the transatlantic slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity.

“Ghana and the AU are set to lead a number of initiatives here in New York including our high-level side event on the Restitution Pillar of Reparatory Justice,” he added.

Mr. Ablakwa said both Ghana and the AU are determined to advance continental unity.

“God bless our efforts for continental African Unity and may the dreams of Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah be fulfilled,” he said.
