Ghana’s Commitment to Regional Integration Rooted in Nkrumah’s Pan-African Vision – Veep

Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, says Ghana remains committed to building a more united, integrated and prosperous West Africa.

She noted that the commitment is deeply rooted in Ghana’s history, from the Pan-African vision of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah to the contributions of successive governments.

The Vice President made the remarks in a Facebook post after joining the ECOWAS Parliament in Accra for the joint opening of its Second Extraordinary Session and Second Parliamentary Seminar of 2026.

The meeting is being held under the theme “Climate Change as a Driver of Environmental Degradation, Population Displacement and Growing Insecurity in the ECOWAS Region.”

In her speech, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stated that the effects of climate change across West Africa are increasingly evident in disrupted livelihoods, displacement and growing insecurity.

“These challenges do not respect national borders, and our response should not either,” she stated.

She emphasised the need for even greater regional cooperation and investment in communities to help them withstand and recover from these pressures, adding that protecting livelihoods and strengthening food security are development priorities and also essential to peace and stability.

The Vice President said the ECOWAS Parliament has an important role in ensuring that regional integration is felt in the everyday lives of citizens, in how easily they can move, trade, work, and pursue opportunities across the region.
