Gov’t To Hold State Funeral For Late Ambassador James Victor Gbeho On July 31

The Government of Ghana has announced plans to hold a State Funeral in honour of the late Ambassador James Victor Gbeho, describing him as one of the country’s most distinguished statesmen.

In a statement issued by the Presidency Communications on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, the government said the funeral will take place in collaboration with the Gbeho and related families at the forecourt of the State House on Friday, July 31, 2026.

The late Ambassador Gbeho was a career diplomat who rose through the ranks of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, serving successively as Chief Director, Deputy Minister, and ultimately Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Beyond his service to Ghana, he also served internationally as Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Somalia, and later as President of the ECOWAS Commission.

The statement noted that the State Funeral is being organised in recognition of his stellar national and international service.

“Government extends its deepest condolences to his family,” the statement added.
