U/WR: Police Bust Motorbike Theft Syndicate, Recover 17 Suspected Stolen Motorbikes

The Police have arrested a group of suspects linked to a motorbike theft syndicate operating in the Upper West Region and recovered 17 suspected stolen motorbikes in the Wa Municipality and surrounding areas.

According to a press release issued by the Public Affairs Unit on July 23, 2026, the operation began after a victim reported on July 11, 2026, that her black Luojia motorbike with registration number M-21-UW 3512 was stolen from the Ghana National Fire Service premises in Jirapa. The victim circulated details of the bike to friends and the Police.

Acting on intelligence, officers arrested Nasiru Muftawu at Loho in possession of the stolen motorbike. During interrogation, he admitted to the theft and was taken into custody to assist with investigations.

Further intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of Basit Muftawu alias Posey, 19 years, Issahaku Maruf alias Katel, 22 years, and Mohammed Ali alias Geewaa, 18 years.

Additional exhibits connected to the offences were also recovered from Rashid Kankan, 20 years, Mutala Rashad, 20 years, and Haruna Hamdan alias DJ, 20 years.

Sustained investigations subsequently led to the recovery of 16 more motorbikes stolen from UBIDS, Chakor and Glamon, all within the Wa Municipality.

The suspects have since been arraigned before the Wa Circuit Court and remanded into police custody. They are scheduled to reappear before the court on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

The Regional Police Command is appealing to members of the public who have lost motorbikes to report to the Wa District Police Headquarters with valid ownership documents for identification and retrieval.

Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Mr Francis Yiribaare, assured the public of the Command’s unwavering commitment to combating crime and dismantling criminal networks. He also urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to support policing efforts in the region.
