Mahama Set For Historic Four-Day Visit to Jamaica to Revitalise Ghana-Caribbean Ties
President John Dramani Mahama will undertake a four-day official visit to Kingston, Jamaica from, August 2 to August 5, 2026, in what the Presidency has described as a move to revitalise Ghana-Caribbean relations and advance the global reparations agenda.
According to a statement from the Presidency Communications, the visit is aimed at strengthening the long-standing historical and diplomatic ties between Ghana and Jamaica, and at encouraging deeper cooperation with the Caribbean Community.
The trip comes shortly after Ghana provided support and relief to Jamaica following a major natural disaster, and President Mahama’s presence in Kingston is expected to demonstrate Ghana’s ongoing solidarity with its Caribbean partners and underscore the strong connection between Africa and its Diaspora during difficult times and recovery.
A key focus of the visit will be the call for reparations for the transatlantic slave trade and its lasting effects.
Building on Ghana’s leadership within the African Union and the Caribbean Community’s efforts, President Mahama will join a high-level Reparations Dialogue at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, with Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of UWI and Chairman of the CARICOM Reparations Commission.
To honour their shared Pan-African history, the President will lay a wreath at the shrine of National Hero The Right Honourable Marcus Mosiah Garvey at National Heroes Park. He will also visit Seville Heritage Park in St. Ann to tour the preserved Ghanaian Village Houses, a recognition of the ancestral roots that connect both countries.
While in Kingston, President Mahama will hold high-level bilateral talks at the Office of the Prime Minister centred on trade, culture, and South-South cooperation.
He is also scheduled to address a joint session of the Houses of Parliament at George William Gordon House, where he will share his vision for a stronger Africa-Caribbean partnership.
Other engagements include a Trade and Investment Dialogue and a tour of the Kingston Freeport hosted by the Port Authority of Jamaica, a courtesy call from Leader of the Opposition Mr. Mark Golding, MP, and participation in the “Mello-Go-Roun” cultural event at the National Arena as Jamaica marks its 64th Independence Anniversary.
Governor-General Sir Patrick Allen and Lady Allen will host a State Dinner in honour of President Mahama at King’s House.
