Mahama Meets Global Health Leaders, Outlines “Accra Reset” for Africa’s Health Sovereignty

President John Dramani Mahama today held high-level talks with global health leaders, Ms. Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of UNAIDS, and Ms. Joy Phumaphi, Executive Secretary of ALMA, on strengthening public health systems across Africa.

At the center of the discussions was the “Accra Reset” – President Mahama’s bold vision for an Africa that manufactures its own vaccines, builds resilient health systems, and moves beyond aid dependency toward true self-reliance.

The President briefed the global health leaders on progress being made in Ghana, highlighting the government’s Free Primary Health Care programme.

Under the initiative, every Ghanaian now has access to free basic healthcare at CHPS compounds and polyclinics without the need for a National Health Insurance card, as the country accelerates toward Universal Health Coverage.

Ms. Byanyima commended President Mahama for championing health sovereignty for Ghana, Africa, and the Global South.

She noted that Africa must take charge of its health future by investing in local production and resilient systems.The meeting comes as Accra hosts the AU Extraordinary Summit on Health, which has brought together African leaders to chart a bold path toward health justice, equity, and improved health outcomes for the continent.

President Mahama emphasized that the Accra Reset is not just a Ghanaian agenda but a continental call to action to ensure Africa is better prepared for future health challenges and less dependent on external support.

The Summit and the bilateral engagements are expected to shape key resolutions on vaccine manufacturing, health financing, and pandemic preparedness ahead of the AU’s adoption of a new health strategy.
