Gov’t to Introduce Coding, AI and TVET in New Basic School Curriculum

Government will this week present a revised curriculum for Kindergarten to Junior High School that introduces coding, artificial intelligence, electronics and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as core focus areas.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, at the Government Accountability Series on July 20, 2026.

According to the Minister, the curriculum review is part of broader education reforms designed to equip young Ghanaians with skills relevant to a changing economy.

“We are moving to ensure that from the basic level, our children are exposed to the tools of the future. Coding, artificial intelligence, electronics and TVET will now form part of the learning experience,” Hon. Iddrisu said.

He added that the reforms are not limited to basic education.

Government also intends to expand access to medical education, drawing lessons from recent reforms in legal education under the Legal Education Act, 2026.

Hon. Iddrisu explained that broadening opportunities in professional training is critical to building the skilled workforce needed to drive Ghana’s long-term development.

“Ongoing reforms in education are aimed at equipping young Ghanaians with relevant skills while increasing access to professional careers in key sectors of the economy,” he stated.

The Minister noted that the changes reflect the government’s commitment to aligning education with industry needs and preparing students for careers in science, technology, health and vocational fields.
