Gov’t Offering Consular Support to Asante Akim North MP Detained in Amsterdam Over US Extradition Order

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, says it is providing consular assistance to the Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Hon. Ohene Kwame Frimpong, who was detained at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on 10th May, 2026 under a United States extradition order.

According to him, Ghana’s Mission in The Hague has taken up the matter.

“Following his detention, our Mission in the Hague has taken up the matter and is offering consular assistance to the Honourable Member,” he said.

Hon. Ablakwa said the Mission is coordinating with the MP’s family, his legal representatives, and the relevant Dutch authorities to ensure he is treated in accordance with internationally recognised standards and that his rights are not violated.

The Minister confirmed that he personally paid Hon. Frimpong a consular visit in The Hague on May 24, 2026.

“I also note that he was doing quite well when I engaged him and I had the opportunity of interacting with his lawyer during the visit,” he added.

Hon. Ablakwa further stated that during the visit of the Dutch Minister for Justice and Security, H.E. David Van Weel, to Ghana on July 21, 2026, the Dutch official affirmed his government’s commitment to due process.

“He stated that the Dutch government commits to due process and will ensure that his rights are respected,” the Minister said.
