Ghana Reaffirms Commitment to Inclusive, Resilient and Sustainable Cities at UN Forum

Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to fast-tracking the implementation of the New Urban Agenda, with a focus on building inclusive, resilient, and sustainable cities.

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Political Forum, the Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, outlined four priority areas to drive Ghana’s urban development agenda.

The priority areas, she said, are: scaling up affordable and inclusive housing, strengthening integrated urban development and spatial planning, expanding urban infrastructure and local economic development, and advancing climate-resilient cities through stronger urban governance and data systems.

Hon. Sowah noted that while Ghana has made significant progress in urban governance and institutional development, the country continues to face major challenges. These include rapid urbanisation and a housing deficit of over 1.8 million units.

To address these gaps, she emphasised that the government will continue to collaborate with development partners, the private sector, and local communities to deliver sustainable urban development for all Ghanaians.
