Ghana and China Sign Protocols to Boost Fisheries and Aquaculture Production

Ghana’s fisheries and aquaculture sector is set for major growth following the signing of official protocols under the Ghana-China Fisheries and Aquaculture Collaboration.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture hosted a high-level meeting with Chinese partners this week to outline key strategies aimed at increasing local production and improving resource management.

Under the new agreement, both countries will undertake in-depth market and water studies to identify optimal zones for aquaculture development across the country.

The collaboration will also focus on evaluating new species for culture, including bighead carp, giant river prawn, and genetically improved tilapia.

Another priority area is sustainability where the partnership will promote eco-friendly solutions by encouraging the use of locally sourced feed raw materials and the establishment of strict quality regulations for aquaculture products.

The Ministry described the signing of the protocols as a significant step toward bringing “cutting-edge science, innovation, and sustainable growth” to Ghana’s aquatic sectors.
