GES Rolls Out Nationwide Play-Based Kindergarten Training to Reach 1.2 Million Learners

The Ghana Education Service has launched a nationwide Early Childhood Education Harmonised Play-Based Kindergarten Training Programme, marking a major push to strengthen foundational learning for the country’s youngest pupils.

Under the leadership of the Ministry of Education and with support from development partners, GES says the initiative reaffirms the government’s commitment to ensuring every Ghanaian child receives quality early childhood education that builds creativity, curiosity, critical thinking and overall development.

The programme adopts a harmonised play-based approach, which GES notes is backed by research and global best practice showing that children learn best through meaningful, enjoyable and age-appropriate experiences.

The new method places the child at the centre of learning, creating space for exploration, discovery, collaboration and problem-solving instead of rote instruction.

To deliver the change in classrooms, GES is undertaking large-scale capacity building across the entire education supervision structure.

National officers, all 16 Regional Early Childhood Education Coordinators, 261 District ECE Coordinators, 261 Deputy Directors in charge of Supervision and 261 District Training Officers will be trained.

More than 30,000 kindergarten teachers across the country will also go through the programme.

The GES expects the intervention to positively impact about 1.2 million kindergarten learners every year, laying what it describes as a strong foundation for improved learning outcomes and lifelong success.

“The Ghana Education Service will continue to ensure that quality education begins from the earliest stages of a child’s development,” the Service said.

“By equipping educators with the knowledge and skills required to deliver effective play-based learning, GES is taking a significant step towards transforming early childhood education and shaping the future of Ghana’s young learners.”

The Service has also expressed appreciation to stakeholders and development partners whose collaboration continues to support efforts to improve educational outcomes for children nationwide.
