Ghana Medical Trust Fund Has Accrued GH¢2.5 Billion — Akandoh Informs Otumfuo

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has disclosed that the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) has accrued GH¢2.5 billion since its establishment.

He made this known during a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace on Friday, July 24, 2026.

Explaining the GMTF initiative, also known as Mahama Cares, the Health Minister said the Fund was set up to address non-communicable diseases, which account for 45% of deaths in the country.

“Financial constraint must not be the reason any Ghanaian is denied care for chronic conditions,” he said.

According to him, the Fund is not only providing direct support for healthcare but is also financing critical facilities and logistics needed to strengthen service delivery across the country.

Mr Akandoh also reported that as part of the Fund’s interventions, government has commenced the construction of three catheterisation laboratories at key referral centres.

The facilities are located at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, and the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

He said the labs will significantly improve access to cardiac and other specialised care for patients who previously had to travel abroad or wait for services in only two centres.

Otumfuo commended the initiative, noting that health is central to national development and urged the Ministry to ensure the funds are used prudently to deliver tangible results for Ghanaians.

The Minister was accompanied by the Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Obuobia Opoku Darko, and other senior health officials.
