We’ve Entered Over 46 MoUs to Send Nurses Abroad — Health Minister

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has disclosed that the government has entered into over 46 Memoranda of Understanding with foreign countries to facilitate the deployment of Ghanaian nurses abroad.

Mr Akandoh said the initiative forms part of government’s broader plan to address nurse unemployment while also generating benefits for the country’s health sector.

He noted that unemployment remains a major challenge in the sector, with about 100,000 nurses currently at home without posting.

To tackle this, the Minister said plans are far advanced to send some of the unemployed nurses abroad for work.

“We are collaborating with some countries to send some of the nurses there to work. We currently have over 46 MoUs pending on our desks,” Mr Akandoh stated during a courtesy visit to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, at the Manhyia Palace on July 24, 2026.

He explained that the bilateral agreements will create job opportunities for Ghanaian nurses and also enable the country to earn foreign exchange that can be reinvested into healthcare.

He also announced that 8,000 nurses have already been recruited.

The Government, he added, intends to recruit 16,000 in total and is awaiting clearance from the Finance Minister to recruit 8,000 more this year.

“We are awaiting clearance from the Finance Minister to recruit 8,000 more this year,” he said.
