KATH Unveils Ambitious Expansion Plans as It Marks 70 Years

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has unveiled an ambitious plan to expand its infrastructure to meet the needs of patients as it marks 70 years of existence.

The announcement was made during the hospital’s End-of-Year Performance Review Conference, held under the theme “KATH @70: Advancing Tertiary Healthcare on the Pillars of Research, Customer-Centric Care and Clinical Mentorship.”

In his address, the Chief Executive Officer, Dr (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo, announced that the hospital’s Board had approved its 2025-2029 Strategic Plan.

He also outlined key investments in facilities, including dialysis centres and progress on the CATHLAB, to strengthen tertiary healthcare delivery.

He reported that construction of a state-of-the-art Catheterization Laboratory and Cardiac Interventional Centre had already commenced under the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares), with completion expected by the third quarter.

He added that steps were underway to complete the Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre and the 192-bed Patients’ Relatives Hostel.

In addition, Dr Baidoo disclosed that work would soon begin on a multi-purpose auditorium with a 100-bed visitors’ hostel, sponsored by the Church of Pentecost.

He said discussions had advanced with the Jospong Group of Companies for the construction of a new Oncology Centre.

He also mentioned plans to acquire a state-of-the-art mammogram machine through the City Cancer Challenge (C/CAN) and Amgen.

It would be the first such machine at the hospital in about 15 years.

Dr Baidoo added that a Memorandum of Understanding had been signed with the Mayo Clinic, designating KATH as the Africa centre for the Mayo Clinic Global Health Programme.

Meanwhile, he announced the rollout of a Clinical Mentorship Programme to support lower-tier hospitals in the Ashanti Region and beyond.
