Government Resumes Evacuation of Ghanaians From South Africa From Sunday
The Government of Ghana has announced it will resume the next phase of evacuations of Ghanaians living in South Africa starting Sunday, July 26, 2026, following ongoing xenophobic attacks against migrants in that country.
This was contained in a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday, July 25, 2026.
According to the Ministry, the latest phase is expected to cover about 1,000 Ghanaians and will be done in groups. The first flights are scheduled to arrive in Accra on Sunday July 26 and Monday July 27, 2026.
The evacuation exercise will commence with Ghanaians who have already registered with the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria to voluntarily return home with government assistance.
The Ministry stated that consistent with government policy, priority will be given to women, children, the elderly, persons with medical conditions, and students.
Distressed Ghanaians in South Africa have been urged to contact the High Commission on telephone number 0723681010 for further inquiries and assistance on travel arrangements.
The government also expressed appreciation to the Ghanaian leadership of the Church of Pentecost in Pretoria and Johannesburg, and to Global Kingdom Investment Pty. Ltd., for allowing their premises to be used as shelters, free of charge, for compatriots who fled their homes while awaiting processing by the High Commission.
The Ministry said the Government of Ghana and the High Commission in Pretoria remain alert and have reactivated emergency consular response to assist all Ghanaians living in South Africa to return home safely.
It further urged all Ghanaians in South Africa to remain calm, avoid areas of unrest, ignore provocations and cooperate fully with officials of the Ghana High Commission to ensure a successful humanitarian evacuation similar to the first phase.
“Government assures that we shall leave no Ghanaian behind in harm’s way,” the statement added.
