Traditional Leadership Shouldn’t Be Seen as an Institution Inherited from the Past – Asantehene

The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called for a fundamental shift in how traditional African leadership is perceived globally.

Delivering a lecture at Howard University in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, the Asantehene asserted that chieftaincy must evolve beyond symbolic heritage to become an active engine for modern development and governance.

Reframing the role of traditional authority in contemporary society, the Asantehene stressed that traditional institutions carry an active duty to address modern challenges.

“Traditional leadership should not be understood mainly as an institution inherited from the past, nor should culture be reduced to a ceremonial display,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu II said.

“Properly understood, both are living resources that can contribute to good governance, social cohesion, peace-building, education, development, confidence, and the renewal of relationships between Africa and the people of African descent throughout the world.”

Addressing an international audience of university leadership, faculty, students, and members of the African diaspora at Howard University, the Asantehene outlined the essential pillars required for traditional institutions to remain relevant and impactful.

He highlighted that leadership must be grounded in ethical stewardship, accountability, and a firm respect for constitutional structures. Rather than operating in conflict with democratic governance, traditional authority should complement it to foster lasting social peace and drive economic progress.

Furthermore, the Asantehene emphasised that chieftaincy must prioritise tangible outcomes for the public, particularly by expanding access to education, resolving community disputes, and acting as a vital bridge to reconnect the African continent with historical and contemporary global Black communities.

The lecture formed a core part of the Asantehene’s official working visit to the United States, setting the stage for upcoming engagements including the historic Akwasidae celebration scheduled for later this week.
