Mahama, Appointees Donate GHS 6.1m Salary to Ghana Medical Trust Fund

President John Dramani Mahama has kept his promise, along with other appointees, to donate portions of their salaries to support patients facing serious illnesses.

The President donated six months of his basic salary while presidential staffers and other government appointees contributed one month of theirs.

The total contribution of GHS 6,102,737.80 was officially presented to the Fund this morning.

The Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Administration, Hon. Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, presented the cheque on behalf of the Presidency.

She described the gesture as more than a financial donation, calling it a lifeline for thousands of Ghanaians struggling to afford treatment for non-communicable diseases.

For many families, Hon. Bampoe Addo noted, the cost of specialist care has meant selling property, exhausting savings, or watching loved ones suffer without help.

She said today’s contribution offers renewed hope to patients awaiting chemotherapy, kidney treatment, life-saving surgeries and other critical interventions.

Receiving the donation, Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku expressed deep appreciation for what she called a significant show of leadership, solidarity and commitment to the welfare of vulnerable Ghanaians.

She emphasised that supporting citizens facing serious health challenges must be a shared national responsibility.

She called on individuals, institutions and corporate bodies to join the effort, saying the impact of the donation will be measured not just in cedis and pesewas, but in lives saved, treatments accessed, families relieved, and futures restored.

“Today, the Presidency has answered the call. The invitation is still open for all Ghanaians to do the same,” she added, urging the public to dial *255# on all networks to contribute to the Fund.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund was established to provide financial support for patients requiring expensive specialist treatment, with the government positioning it as a collective effort to ease the burden of healthcare costs on struggling families.
