Health Minister Inaugurates New Ghana Psychology Council Board

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has inaugurated the newly constituted Advisory Board of the Ghana Psychology Council, with a charge for members to provide strategic leadership and strengthen the regulation of psychological practice in the country.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on June 15, 2026, Akandoh said the Board’s role is critical as mental health continues to gain prominence in Ghana’s healthcare system.

He urged the members to set clear policies that will professionalise the practice of psychology, protect the public, and ensure only qualified practitioners deliver services.

The Minister stressed that strategic leadership from the Board will help address gaps in regulation, improve standards of training, and build public trust in psychological services.

He also called on the Council to collaborate with stakeholders in health, education and social services to integrate mental health care into mainstream health delivery.

The Ghana Psychology Council is the statutory body mandated to regulate the practice of psychology, register qualified psychologists, and maintain professional and ethical standards.

The newly inaugurated Board is expected to guide the Council in enforcing compliance, handling disciplinary matters, and expanding access to quality mental health services across the country.

Board members pledged to work with the Ministry of Health and other partners to advance the Council’s mandate and support the government’s agenda of making mental health care more accessible and responsive to Ghanaians.
