Daasebre Osei Bonsu II Burial Rites Pull Mammoth Crowd on First Day

Hundreds flocked to the Amaniampong Palace for the inaugural day of the three-day burial rites of the deceased Paramount Chief of Asante Mampong Traditional Council, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II.

This solemn event was ushered in by a pre-burial ceremony on June 6, 2025, which included a memorial candle lighting in tribute to the revered deceased.

As part of the Dɔte Yie, the remains of the late traditional ruler was displayed in repose on Saturday, June 7, 2025.

The day’s event was in two sessions- morning and afternoon.

The first session began around 7 am and concluded around 11 am with the second session kicking off around 2 pm.

Traditional authorities, royals, family members, dignitaries and the general public were offered the opportunity to file past and pay their last respects.

Joining the Council to mourn included, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon Frank Amoakohene, former lawmaker, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, 2024 Presidential Candidate, Nana Kwame Bediako and business partners Dr Osei Kwame Despite and Dr Ofori Sarpong.

A delegation from Eswatini representing Mswati III were also present to pay tribute.

Traditional priests and queens articulated their grief through intricate footwork and emotive gestures under the rhythm of the fontomfrom.

Daasebre’s demise was publicly announced in late April.

The unforeseen incident struck while Daasebre was acting as caretaker of the Asante Kingdom in the absence of the King, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

He was last seen publicly condemning tribal remarks by some members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the nomination of a Municipal Chief Executive for the Area.

Born Oswald Gyimah-Kessie on December 31,1939, the late Mamponghene was a lawyer and economist.

He also served with distinc­tion as Registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Daasebre ascended the stool in 1996, bringing his expertise to his royal duties.
