Otumfuo Destools Chief Of Kwaso

The President of the Kumasi Traditional Council, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has destooled Nana Nketia Boampong II, the Chief of Kwaso in the Ejusu Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The King of the Asante Kingdom ordered his destoolment rites on Thursday, June 8, 2023, when the Council sat to hear his case which involved going against his oath of office, taking a bribe and his personality as a drunkard.

This comes days after the destoolment of the Chief of Antoa, Nana Kwame Owusu Agyeman.

Nana Nketia Boampong II is a member of the Benkum Division of the Kumasi Traditional Council.

Bribery
It all began when the Dikro stool of the Worakese community became vacant and one of the royals identified as Yaw Gyimah approached the queen mother of Worakese to bequeath it to him.

When his attempt with the queen mother proved unsuccessful, he run to the Chief of Kwaso who demanded an amount of GHC3 billion in exchange. He managed to pay GHc1.5 billion, however, Nana Nketia Boampong II failed to honour his side of the deal.

Gyimah then filed a formal complaint with the Benkum Division of the KTC but was snubbed.

He then proceeded to file his case with the Kumasi Traditional Council where Asantehene together with other elders finally heard his case.

Violation Of Oath Of Office
When he was hauled before the Council on June 8, Nana Nketia Boampong II initially denied the allegations noting that he never received money from Gyimah.

According to him, the money from Gyimah was received by his brother. He also stated the amount was rather GHC630 million and not GHC1.5 billion.

He said when the payment came to his attention, he paid back GHC420 million to Gyimah.

A witness he brought before the Council testified against him. Nana Nketia Boampong II eventually took back his denial and pleaded guilty.

Additionally, it is reported that the chief is alcoholic.

Judgement
In his judgement, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II noted that Nana Nketia Boampong II engaged in extortion when he demanded money from Gyimah.

He also said he went against his oath of office- in honesty- when he lied to him about taking a bribe.

Plus, his drunkenness proves him unfit to continue occupying the stool, the King ruled.

He also faulted the Benkum Division and the elders of Kwaso for ignoring such an important case when they were petitioned.

Whereas Nana Nketia Boampong II was awarded destoolment, the Benkum Division and the stool elders of Kwaso were slapped with fines.

Each member of the Benkum Division is required to present two rams while all the stool elders will present four rams.
