Asantehene Courts Support from Lambeth Palace for Anglican Church in Ghana

The Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has encouraged Lambeth Palace to foster closer ties with Ghana’s Anglican Church through the provision of support.

During a courtesy visit by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dame Sarah Mullaly, on July 29, 2026, Otumfuo highlighted some needs of the Church while testifying to the commitment of the Bishops towards the Church’s advancement.

“All the bishops have been very good. They are developing the Church, and I have every confidence in them to continue the development of the church under the able leadership of Archbishop Ben-Smith.”

That notwithstanding, Otumfuo implored Lambeth Palace to make provision for support when requests are put in.

“I will incline that Lambeth Palace will build a good relationship so that it will inure to the development of the Anglican Church in Ghana also. We know that Ghana has to create its own money and Lambeth Palace has to create its own money, but at times we need support.

“Technically, give support from your end. Please bear in mind that there are certain things needed to support people of the church and that relationship can be solidified such that when requests come, you consider it,” Otumfuo said during a dinner.

Dame Mullally visited the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi as part of her pastoral visit to Ghana and Cameroon from July 25 to August 4, 2026, at the invitation of the Primate of West Africa.

Her Grace was accompanied by her spouse, Eamonn Mullally, and the Primate of the Church of the Province of West Africa, Archbishop Dr Cyril Kobina Ben-Smith.

She is the third Archbishop of Canterbury to visit the Manhyia Palace.
