Allegiance to Party Is Often Stronger than Allegiance to Ghana – Otumfuo

The Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has said that partisan politics has consumed Ghana’s most productive years over the last six decades.

Speaking at the Ghana Business Leaders’ Conclave on May 15, 2026, the Asantehene observed that allegiance to political parties has too often taken precedence over allegiance to the state, weakening national progress.

“Politics has clouded those decades because allegiance to party has too often been stronger than allegiance to the state,” he stated.

Otumfuo called for greater honesty in assessing Ghana’s post-independence journey, noting that the country’s political culture has not always served its development needs.

“We must be honest enough to admit that the past decades have been too dominated by politics, and not always by the kind of politics that builds our nation,” he said.

“We have sung the praises of politicians and ignored those whose toil, innovation, and enterprise drive the nation forward.”

The Asantehene’s remarks formed part of a broader address on leadership, ethics, and economic sustainability at the Conclave, where he urged Ghanaians to shift from political rhetoric to tangible nation-building.

He argued that until citizens and leaders place the national interest above partisan loyalty, Ghana will struggle to convert its democratic gains into broad-based prosperity.

The Ghana Business Leaders’ Conclave brought together policymakers, entrepreneurs, and traditional leaders to discuss strategies for ethical governance and sustainable business growth.
