Has Independence Translated into Prosperity, Opportunity and Dignity for Citizens?- Otumfuo

The Occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called for a deeper national reflection on the impact of political independence on prosperity for ordinary citizens.

Despite the country’s historic role in Africa’s liberation struggle, Otumfuo decried the gap between Ghana’s independence struggle and the realities faced by many Ghanaians today.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, when we look back over almost seven decades of independence, we must ask ourselves whether we have made the best of our freedom and our lives. We must ask whether the promise of independence has been translated into prosperity in every home, opportunity for every child and dignity for every citizen.”

His Majesty stressed that the true measure of national progress lies in the strength of the economy and its ability to meet basic needs.

“There is no truer measure of our national progress than the state of our economy. It is the economy that determines whether we are able to provide food for the table, shelter for families, clothes for children, education for our people, healthcare for our communities, and safety for our homes,” Otumfuo stated.

While acknowledging that every Ghanaian hopes for better years ahead, the Asantehene said that the future depends on citizens taking ownership of the country’s development.

He urged Ghanaians to move beyond the celebration of past achievements and assume the role of nation builders through innovation, enterprise, and productivity.

Otumfuo made these remarks at the Ghana Business Leaders’ Conclave on May 15, 2026, at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).
