Water Resources Commission Alerts Communities Ahead of Possible Bagré Dam Spillage
The Water Resources Commission (WRC) has notified the public of a planned controlled water spillage from the Bagré Dam in Burkina Faso, warning communities along the White Volta River to take precautionary measures.
In a press release issued on August 4, 2026, the Commission said it received an update from SONABEL, operators of the Bagré Dam, indicating that the reservoir water level stood at 232.93 metres as of Tuesday, August 4, 2026. This represents a filling rate of 62.77%.
According to the WRC, SONABEL plans to commence controlled spillage from the dam from Tuesday, August 11, 2026, if the reservoir level reaches the 234.00-metre mark.
“The Water Resources Commission wishes to notify all stakeholders and the general public of an update of reservoir water levels from SONABEL, the operators of the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso,” the statement said.
The Commission has advised communities along the White Volta River and adjoining areas to take necessary precautions and adhere strictly to safety guidelines issued by Local Assemblies and other appropriate agencies.
The annual spillage of the Bagré Dam often leads to flooding in parts of the northern regions of Ghana, affecting homes, farms, and livelihoods.
The WRC assured that it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed.
