Transport Fares Remain Unchanged as Operators Welcome Fuel Price Reduction
Commercial transport operators have announced that fares across all routes will remain unchanged following the government’s recent reduction in fuel prices.
In a joint press release dated August 5, 2026, the leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress and the Ghana Road Transport Co-ordinating Council (GRTCC) said the decision was reached after consultations with their national executives and stakeholders.
The unions commended the Government of Ghana, under President John Dramani Mahama, for the regulatory intervention which reduced the margin on diesel by GH¢2.00 per litre, which took effect on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, and lasts for a period of one month.
“Prior to both interventions, our leadership engaged with the sector Minister, presenting the case for drivers and calling for urgent relief. We are happy that those engagements yielded results,” the statement said.
The transport groups urged government to extend the relief beyond the one-month window if oil prices continue to rise.
The unions also directed all drivers, station masters, and branch executives to strictly adhere to the approved fare structure.
“We call on all drivers… to strictly observe the approved fare structure. No additional charges outside the official fare table will be permitted,” they stated.
Commuters who are made to pay above the approved fare have been advised to report the matter immediately to the nearest union office for prompt redress.
