KTC: Why Otumfuo Suspended Proceedings on Awua Dumase, Buoho Ankaase, and Ohwim Disputes Today

The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has suspended proceedings on chieftaincy disputes involving Awua Dumase, Buoho Ankaase, and Ohwim for further investigations.

These chieftaincy cases which have stalled enstoolment processes for vacant male stools featured on the Kumasi Traditional Council (KTC) agenda on May 7, 2026.

The Asantehene presided over the Council meeting as part of efforts to secure an amicable resolution and ensure lasting peace.

Following individual hearings of the cases, His Majesty directed that the resolution process be suspended, with all three matters to be recalled on May 18, 2026.

Awua Dumase
This was the first case heard during the sitting.

Four individuals are claiming membership of the royal family, a claim contested by another person who recently proved before the Council, using his family tree, that the current Queen of the area is not legitimately entitled to the stool.

The absence of one of the plaintiffs compelled the Asantehene to suspend proceedings until May 18, 2026.

Otumfuo directed all plaintiffs to present their family trees as proof when they reappear as he assured the parties of a thorough investigation to ensure peace prevails and cautioned against any attempts at inducement.

“When you return, each of you must come with a detailed family tree and make sure you do not give it to anyone here. You will present it to the Council only. Do not be frightened. We will only seek the truth,” he said.

“Do not pay anyone money for a favourable verdict, because you will not get it. I hope you know I can trace family lineages.”

Buoho Ankaase
The case centres on a disagreement between the family head, Opanin Frimpong Manso and a section of the family over the selection of a successor to the vacant male stool.

When the matter was called, Opanin Manso presented two women to the Asantehene as heads of the royal households, while he noted that two royals had expressed interest in the stool.

Reacting to this, a young man stepped forward to raise a humble objection with claims that one royal household had been sidelined by the family head.

The family head, however, maintained that the group were not royals but descendants of male royals.

The Asantehene ruled: “We must investigate to determine whether they are indeed descendants of male royals. We want only the truth to prevail so that no one is unfairly disadvantaged.”

Ohwim
Proceedings in this case were suspended due to the absence of one of the leaders of the three royal houses, which had been invited to confirm its choice of nominee.

Present were Nana Yaa Menewoka of the Sabronum house and Akua Afrakoma of the Biemso house.

The leader of the Nsesresu house, identified as Konadu, was absent due to ill health.
