Asantehemaa Receives Archbishop of Canterbury at Manhyia Palace
The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Sarah Mullally, has paid a courtesy visit to the Queen of the Asante Kingdom, Nana Yaa Akyaa II.
The visit took place on July 29, 2026, in Kumasi as part of her pastoral visit to Ghana.
In her remarks, Her Grace acknowledged that the Anglican Communion spans more than 160 countries and commended Ghana for its steadfast Christian faith.
“Ghana has kept the faith and I love this country,” she said.
She also expressed appreciation to the Manhyia Palace for its enduring ties with the Church.
“We are grateful for the partnership, and it is an honour to come to pay tribute to Your Majesty. It is an honour that you are part of the Anglican Church,” she added.
Her Grace presented a gift to the Asantehemaa and offered prayers for her.
Welcoming the Archbishop, Nana Yaa Akyaa II expressed her joy at hosting her.
Her Majesty further wished her well in her endeavour across Africa.
The visit to the Asantehemaa preceded her courtesy call on the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The Archbishop is accompanied by her husband, Eamonn Mullally.
She is on a pastoral visit to Ghana and Cameroon in the Church of the Province of West Africa at the invitation of the Primate of West Africa, Archbishop Dr. Cyril Kobina Ben-Smith.
Her visit to Africa began on July 25 and will end on August 4, 2026.
The Most Reverend Sarah Mullally, who succeeded the Most Reverend Justin Welby, is the first female Archbishop of Canterbury.
