272 Ghanaians Lured into Russia-Ukraine Conflict, 55 Killed- Foreign Minister

At least 55 Ghanaian nationals have been killed after being lured into the ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict through fake overseas employment schemes, the Government has confirmed.

They were among approximately 272 Ghanaian nationals believed to have been recruited into the conflict since 2022,

“Two currently {are} being held as prisoners of war,” Hon. Ablakwa said at a presser.

He noted that about 1,780 African nationals from 36 countries are estimated to have joined Russian forces.

According to the Minister, many of the victims were recruited with false promises of jobs in construction, hospitality, logistics and security services.

They were later compelled to undergo military training and deployed to combat zones.

Hon. Ablakwa said Government has begun diplomatic engagements with relevant authorities to establish the identities and welfare of affected Ghanaians.

Domestic security agencies have also been tasked to investigate recruitment networks targeting Ghanaian youth.

He added that public education campaigns are ongoing to encourage prospective migrants to verify overseas employment opportunities before travelling and to remain vigilant against fraudulent schemes.

“Government is seriously concerned by reports of Ghanaian youth who are lured through deceptive employment schemes and subsequently deployed to participate in the ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict,” the Minister stated.
