W/NR: NAIMOS Arrests 8 Suspected Illegal Miners in Akontombra District Raid

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat has arrested eight suspected illegal miners during an operation in Sikaniasem, Akontombra District, Western North Region.
According to NAIMOS, the raid was carried out on July 29, 2026, and targeted illegal mining activities that were affecting an unnamed stream and a nearby forest area.
The eight suspects arrested comprise six Ghanaians and two Chinese nationals.
During the operation, the Taskforce located three excavators at the site and retrieved critical components from some of the machines to render them inoperable.
Two water pumps were also destroyed.
In addition, a Toyota Land Cruiser V8 and a generator were seized from the location.
The arrested suspects and all seized items have since been secured for further investigation and appropriate legal action.
NAIMOS said it is continuing investigations into the wider network of individuals suspected of financing and facilitating illegal mining activities in the area, as part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on galamsey and protect the country’s water bodies and forest reserves.
