Six Arrested, Two Excavators Seized in Galamsey Operation at Abesewa Forest

Six suspects have been arrested and two excavators impounded following a swoop on illegal mining activities in the Abesewa Forest in the Ashanti Region.
The operation was carried out after a whistleblower report alerted authorities to galamsey activities within the forest reserve.
According to the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the suspects were picked up during a coordinated operation by the National Intelligence and Mining Operations Secretariat, NIAMOS, and the Regional Security Liaison Secretariat.
In a statement on the matter, Dr. Amoakohene commended both agencies for their swift response and coordinated action which led to the arrests and seizure of the equipment.
He said the crackdown forms part of ongoing efforts by the Regional Coordinating Council to clamp down on illegal mining and protect forest reserves across the region.
The Regional Minister also urged members of the public to continue reporting illegal mining and other environmental crimes to the appropriate authorities.
He emphasised that community involvement is critical to safeguarding Ghana’s forests and natural resources.
Dr. Amoakohene provided a whistleblower hotline, +233 55 403 2482, for persons with information on galamsey and other environmental offenses to share tips confidentially.
