Mahama Welcomes Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally on Historic First Africa Visit
President John Dramani Mahama on Monday received the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Sarah Mullally, at the Presidency in Accra during her first official visit to Africa since her appointment.
The meeting marked the first time a female Archbishop of Canterbury is visiting the continent in that capacity.
Welcoming the Archbishop, President Mahama congratulated her on her historic appointment as the first female Archbishop of Canterbury.
He described the milestone as significant not only for the Anglican Communion but for women in global leadership.
The President reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding partnership with the Anglican Church in areas that directly impact citizens.
“Our collaboration with the Anglican Church has been instrumental in promoting peace, education, healthcare, social justice, and national development,” President Mahama said. “Ghana values the Church’s contributions to community development and moral leadership.”
The courtesy call highlighted the enduring relationship between Ghana, the Anglican Church, and the United Kingdom.
Archbishop Mullally expressed appreciation for the warm reception and commended Ghana for its reputation for religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
She said the visit was aimed at deepening ties with Anglican provinces in Africa and supporting joint efforts in peacebuilding and human development.
The Archbishop of Canterbury is the spiritual leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion, which has a significant presence in Ghana.
