GTEC Queries Spio-Garbrah Over Use of “Dr” Title, Demands Proof

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has formally questioned the use of the academic title “Dr.” by Presidential Special Envoy for Reparations, Amb. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, and is demanding documentation to prove the doctorate was duly earned.

In a letter dated July 27, 2026, GTEC said it had taken note of Spio-Garbrah’s use of the title “Amb. Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah”.

The Commission expressed concern regarding the use of academic titles that have not been duly earned or conferred through a recognised academic process.

According to GTEC, the use of such titles, particularly when lacking formal academic validation, can be misleading and is inconsistent with established academic protocols and standards governing the conferment and use of academic ranks in Ghana.

To that end, GTEC requested clarification on the use of the title “Dr,” demanding the name of the awarding institution, whether the doctoral degree is earned or honorary, the date it was conferred, and the process through which it was conferred.

The Commission stated that should Spio-Garbrah be unable to provide the required documentation, he will be expected without delay to respectfully cease the use of the title “Dr.”

He must also provide verifiable evidence that the title has been withdrawn from all relevant platforms.

These include official documents, institutional profiles, websites, letterheads, and any other public or professional representations.

GTEC said it expected full cooperation and looks forward to prompt compliance by July 31, 2026.
