BoG Governor Urges Evidence-Based Decisions as MPC Meets Amid Global Uncertainty

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, on Monday, July 20, 2026, opened the 131st Monetary Policy Committee Meeting, calling for careful and evidence-based policy decisions in the face of global uncertainty and rising energy prices.

Addressing members of the Committee, Dr Asiama said the MPC will review recent inflation trends, the impact of the Bank’s policy reforms announced in May, evolving domestic liquidity conditions, and external risks to the economy.

He noted that despite the pressures, Ghana continues to demonstrate macroeconomic resilience.

“Our task this week is not simply to assess the latest data. It is to determine whether the framework we strengthened in May remains fit for the conditions now before us, and whether the choices we made then continue to serve the medium-term objectives on which our credibility depends,” the Governor stated.

The MPC meeting is expected to inform the Bank’s next monetary policy decision, which will be closely watched by markets, businesses and consumers amid ongoing global volatility.

In a separate announcement, Dr Asiama unveiled the inaugural Monetary Policy Committee Educational Observership Programme [MPC-EOP]. The programme has welcomed students from the University of Ghana to observe aspects of the MPC process.

According to the Governor, the initiative forms part of the Bank’s commitment to transparency, public engagement, and nurturing the next generation of economists and policymakers.
