Bank of Ghana Announces 60th Anniversary Celebration of Cedi

The Central Bank of Ghana will this year mark 60 years since the introduction of the Ghana cedi to replace the Ghanaian pound as legal tender.

In a statement, the Bank said the Cedi remains a strong symbol of the country’s economic sovereignty and development.

“To adapt to the changing demands of the Ghanaian economy, the Cedi has evolved through several modifications in form and policy direction over the last 60 years. Ghana’s tenacity, innovation and quest for economic stability are all embodied in the Cedi’s reforms, from the first note and coins to the safe currency we use today.”

It is in the spirit of this that the Bank looks forward to the commemoration of the 60th anniversary with a lineup of events across the nation to mark the anniversary.

They include the official launch of the celebration, exhibitions, educational campaigns and stakeholder forum.

The events will take place from July to December 2025.

“This anniversary offers an opportunity for Ghanaians to reflect on the history of the country, and to reaffirm our responsibility to protect the value and integrity of the currency. In addition to being a medium of exchange, the Cedi is a symbol of our pride, heritage and shared aspirations for a prosperous future.”
