Ashanti Region Explores Waste-to-Energy Drive Partnerships in Switzerland

The Ashanti Region is seeking technical and investment partnerships with Switzerland’s Arabern Wastewater Treatment Plant in Bern to strengthen local waste-to-energy systems.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, led a delegation to the facility earlier today as part of ongoing efforts to explore collaboration on sustainable environmental management.

He was joined by Ghana’s Ambassador to Switzerland, H.E. Prof. Mrs Esi Awuah, Oforikrom MCE Hon. Anwel Sadat, officials from the Oforikrom Municipal Assembly, and technical partners supporting the exchange programme.

Talks centred on potential partnership areas, including wastewater management systems, funding and financing models, sewer network connectivity, and risk mitigation strategies.

The delegation also engaged officials on value chain analysis, cross-platform operational management, institutional support for local authorities, and recycling systems that feed into energy generation.

Dr Amoakohene said the Bern model offers practical lessons that can be adapted to improve waste handling in Oforikrom and across the Ashanti Region.

“We are particularly interested in exploring practical lessons and partnerships that can strengthen waste management systems,” he noted, adding that integrated waste and wastewater solutions can support environmental sustainability, public health, energy generation, and economic growth.

The Regional Minister emphasised that international cooperation and knowledge exchange will be key as the region works to build cleaner, greener, and more resilient communities.

Follow-up engagements with Swiss technical partners are expected to shape the next phase of the partnership exploration.
