GSA to Strictly Enforce Vehicle Homologation Rules from October 1

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has announced that it will commence the strict enforcement of the National Vehicle Homologation and Conformity Assessment Programme from October 1, 2026.

In a public notice issued on Monday, August 3, 2026, the GSA said the programme has been in operation since 2020, but strict enforcement of applicable national vehicle standards, including the Ghana Standard 4510 (GS 4510 – Requirements for the Importation of Used Vehicles), will now take effect.

According to the Authority, the programme is intended to ensure that all vehicles imported, assembled or manufactured in Ghana comply with applicable national safety, quality and environmental standards.

It is also aimed at protecting consumers from unsafe and environmentally harmful vehicles while promoting a safer and more regulated automotive industry.

The GSA stated that effective October 1, 2026, all new vehicle manufacturers and assemblers, as well as used vehicle importers, distributors and dealers, are required to register with the Authority. All new vehicle models must also be homologated, while all used vehicle units must conform to the applicable Ghana Standards before shipment to Ghana.

The Authority warned that vehicles that do not meet the prescribed requirements will not be permitted for importation into the country upon arrival.

However, the GSA clarified that the new enforcement does not constitute a ban on the importation of used vehicles.

It encouraged all stakeholders to familiarise themselves with the applicable requirements and to take the necessary steps to ensure compliance before importing vehicles into Ghana.
