Asantehene Proposes Howard-Manhyia Dialogue to Solve Governance, Diaspora Challenges — Otumfuo

The Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has proposed the establishment of a “Howard-Manhyia Dialogue” to examine pressing global issues across governance, culture, and African diaspora affairs.

In a public lecture at Howard University in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, the King emphasised that indigenous institutions must be subjected to rigorous academic inquiry rather than superficial praise.

The Asantehene made a direct call for structured intellectual engagement between higher education and traditional authorities.

“There is room for Howard-Manhyia dialogue through which scholars and traditional leaders might examine the most important questions confronting governance, culture and African diaspora nations. Our objective should not be to celebrate traditional institutions uncritically, but to study them seriously.”

The King made the proposal while calling for intellectual collaboration between academic institutions and traditional authorities.

Outlining specific areas for immediate institutional cooperation, he highlighted the need for sustained comparative research into traditional constitutionalism, customary law, mediation, restorative justice, the role of queen mothers, environmental stewardship, and community mobilisation.

He also championed a major digital heritage preservation initiative to connect archives, oral histories, royal records, and endangered cultural knowledge.

Furthermore, he advocated for faculty and student exchange programmes that allow young people to engage African and diaspora communities as active contributors, alongside professional partnerships linking physicians, lawyers, engineers, academics, artists, historians, and entrepreneurs across continents.
