Barker-Vormawor Urges Govt to Ratify Hague Convention on International Child Abduction

Activist and legal practitioner Oliver Barker-Vormawor has called on the government of Ghana to urgently ratify the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction.

In a Facebook post, Mr Barker-Vormawor said Ghana needs to take immediate steps to join the treaty to provide legal protection for children and parents caught in cross-border custody disputes.

The Hague Convention, adopted in 1980, establishes procedures for the prompt return of children who have been wrongfully removed from or retained in a country other than their country of habitual residence.

It also seeks to ensure that custody and access rights are respected across international borders.

Ghana has not yet ratified the Convention, meaning the country currently lacks a formal legal framework to handle international child abduction cases with other signatory states.

Mr Barker-Vormawor argued that ratification would strengthen Ghana’s child protection systems and provide recourse for Ghanaian parents whose children are taken abroad without consent, as well as for foreign nationals seeking the return of children to Ghana.
