2026 BECE: Education Ministry Issues Guidelines for Candidates, Parents to Choose Schools

The Ministry of Education has released key guidelines for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates and parents ahead of senior high school selection, stressing that careful choices are critical to securing placement.

In a series of infographics released alongside the announcement, the Ministry, together with the Ghana Education Service and Ghana TVET Service, outlined what every candidate must know before submitting their selection form.

Candidates are required to select a total of 8 schools and rank them from 1st to 8th.

They must also choose their preferred programmes and indicate whether they want Boarding or Day.

The Ministry advised that “your first choice should be a school you have a realistic opportunity of gaining admission to based on your results.” It added that “wise choices today will improve your chances of securing placement into one of your preferred schools.”

Candidates must choose a maximum of two schools in Category A, three schools in Category B, and use the remaining choices in Category C.

Candidates were also cautioned to “Never repeat the same school” on the form.

Of the 8 choices, candidates can select a maximum of 5 boarding schools and a maximum of 3 day schools.

The Ministry further advised that day schools should be “close enough for easy daily travel.”

According to the Ministry, before submitting the selection form, candidates and parents must choose schools and programmes that reflect academic performance and career aspirations and ensure the first choice is realistic based on the BECE results.

The Ministry of Education, GES and Ghana TVET Service urged all stakeholders to follow the guidelines to avoid placement challenges and to help students gain admission to schools that match their abilities and aspirations.
