We’re Assured You Will Steer the Ship and Make it Stable – Otumfuo to Archbishop of Canterbury
The Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has expressed confidence in the leadership of the new Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend and Right Honourable Dame Sarah Mullally.
On her visit to the Manhyia Palace on July 29, 2026, His Majesty expressed expectation that her tenure will bring stability to the Anglican Communion.
Addressing Dame Mullally, the first female Archbishop of Canterbury, His Majesty acknowledged the turbulent times facing the global Church and called for unity, prayer, and integrity among its leaders.
“The old world is in a confused state now. It is only prayer and also being honest and faithful to each other that can help. We pray that in your tenure, the Anglican Church will grow… Your taking up this office gives us the assurance that you will steer the ship to make it more stable and calm the waters,” he said.
Otumfuo noted that despite differing views within the Communion, particularly in Africa, the Church must remain united and move in one direction.
He reaffirmed the Ghana Diocese’s backing for Dame Mullally and expressed hope that under her leadership, the Anglican Church would experience growth and renewed steadiness.
The Archbishop was accompanied by her spouse, Eamonn Mullally, and the Primate of the Church of the Province of West Africa, Archbishop Dr Cyril Kobina Ben-Smith.
Dame Mullally is on a pastoral visit to Ghana and Cameroon from July 25 to August 4, 2026. She is the third Archbishop of Canterbury to visit the Manhyia Palace.
