US Extradites Sedina Tamakloe Attionu to Ghana Over $6M Corruption Charges

The United States has extradited Sedina Tamakloe Attionu to Ghana following her conviction on more than 70 corruption-related charges, including embezzling over $6 million in Ghanaian taxpayer funds.

The US Embassy in Ghana announced the development on June 9, 2026, emphasising “justice with no borders.”

The Embassy said the extradition demonstrates the strength of the U.S.-Ghana law enforcement partnership and a shared commitment to accountability and the rule of law.

US authorities completed the extradition process, returning her to face further legal processes in Ghana.

The Embassy noted that this marks the first extradition from the United States to Ghana since 2009, underscoring renewed cooperation between the two countries on anti-corruption and criminal justice matters.

The High Court convicted and sentenced Tamakloe Attionu in absentia in April 2024 on more than 70 corruption-related charges.

In July 2024, the government of Ghana submitted an extradition request to the United States for her surrender.

After more than two years of court proceedings in the US, American authorities notified Ghana of her surrender in January this year.

According to government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, she was flown into Accra on Tuesday and taken into custody by officials of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Prisons Service, who are making preparations for her to begin her sentence.
