Interior Minister Warns of Strict Enforcement as Gun Amnesty Window Closes

The Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, says the conclusion of the gun amnesty programme marks a transition from voluntary compliance to full, robust enforcement of firearms laws.
Addressing a press conference on June 23, 2026, Mubarak described the amnesty as a temporary window of grace.
With the expiration of the amnesty, he said, security agencies will intensify intelligence-led operations, searches, swoops, and surveillance of criminal networks.
“All illicit firearms will be confiscated, and offenders will face arrest and prosecution in accordance with the law,” he said, announcing an informant reward system to encourage citizens to provide credible information on illegal firearms.
He added that the government is also strengthening border control to combat the trafficking of illicit arms, ensuring a comprehensive and sustained response.
Mubarak stressed that sustaining the gains of the programme demands continuous vigilance and collective action and thus urged all citizens to remain law-abiding, support security agencies with credible information, and reject silence in the face of illegality.
“Peace is not merely the absence of conflict. It is the presence of safety, trust and respect for human life,” he stated.
