Mother of thirty-eight years old who drowned in the Nwabe river at Ohwim in the Bantama constituency, Ajara Sumaila has called on authorities to put the bridge that links Bantama and Barekese roads in a better condition.
Sumaila Mohammed, a husband, father of five and motorbike mechanic was swept away together with his motorbike by a flood on the said stretch on Wednesday 23rd June, 2021 during the rain.
The bridge is notorious for its catastrophic floods whenever it rains.
The deceased, until last Wednesday lived and worked at Akyiase in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District in the Ashanti region.
“He went to work last Wednesday but later we were told he had gone to the market to buy some goods. When he got to the river on his way back, it had flooded so he called to inform us he was going to spend the night with a relative at North Suntreso.
“Later we called to know if he was there but the call wasn’t going through. The next day his phone couldn’t be reached. We called the relative at North Suntreso but she said he wasn’t there so I called other relatives and they all said he hadn’t been with them.”
“One of them however told us he had heard a motorbike rider had drowned in the Nwabe river so we went to confirm and it was him. His body was found around 9 a.m. yesterday”, mother of the deceased recounted.
“My son spent the night in the river, my son spent the night in a forest, that is what saddens me. Please repair the bridge for me!”, she wailed uncontrollably.
