Obuasi SHTS Case: Let’s Allow The Law To Take Its Course – Vice President

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has urged the public to allow the law to take its course in the sexual misconduct allegations involving the interdicted headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai.

She described the case as a serious national concern, stressing that its possible effects on the students involved could extend beyond the present.

“What I want to say at this point is that this is a very, very serious matter. It is a matter of concern to all of us, and it is a matter of national concern,” she said.

She further called for patience as the legal process unfolds, noting the potential long-term consequences for those affected.

“What I want to see is that we all allow the law to take its course, because this is a very serious matter, especially as it affects the lives of people, not only in the present, but also going into the future. So, let’s allow the law to take its course,” she added.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang made the remarks upon returning from the Global South Academic Forum in Shanghai, China.

Her comments come amid allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse involving female students of the school, which have led to Abdulai’s interdiction and reports of his arrest.

Police records indicate that a 20-year-old Form Two student, accompanied by her father, reported the matter to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Obuasi on August 4, 2026. Other reports have alleged that 19 additional girls were affected.

The case has generated public concern, with calls for a comprehensive investigation into the allegations.

Before the Vice President spoke, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Director of Communications, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, had criticised her for not publicly addressing the matter.

He argued that, as Ghana’s first female Vice President, Professor Opoku-Agyemang was expected to be vocal on matters concerning the protection of children, particularly girls.

The allegations against Abdulai remain under investigation.
