Obuasi SHTS Headmaster Arrested Over Alleged Sexual Misconduct

The headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai, has been arrested in connection with allegations of sexual misconduct involving female students, the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has disclosed.

Mr Muntaka said the case had been transferred from the Ashanti Regional Police Command to the Police Headquarters in Accra for further investigation.

Appearing before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee on Tuesday, October 20, the minister said the police were taking steps to obtain a DNA sample from the headmaster for comparison with semen reportedly found on a dress belonging to one of the alleged victims.

He explained that the matter was brought to his attention on September 7, when a report reached the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), after which he called for the case to be moved to the national headquarters.

Providing an update on the investigation, Mr Muntaka confirmed that the headmaster had been arrested and had given a statement to the police.

“It came to my attention on September 7 when the report came to the CID and I insisted that it should be moved from the Region to the national headquarters.

He said the case was now being handled at the Police Headquarters and that investigators were working to obtain DNA evidence as part of their inquiries.

“As we speak, the matter is at the police headquarters being handled. We have been able to get one of the ladies, about semen. We are getting DNA as well.

Mr Muntaka added that the headmaster had been taken through the required procedures following his arrest.

“What is happening is this gentleman has been arrested, his statement has been taken and he is going through the due process,” he stated.

The minister further explained that the police required court authorisation before they could obtain the headmaster’s DNA sample, adding that the process was ongoing.

“To even get his DNA, the law requires that we have to go to court, so the process is on,” he said.

He assured that the allegations would be investigated through the appropriate legal procedures, allowing the headmaster the opportunity to respond to the claims against him.

Meanwhile, Mr Abdulai has indicated his intention to use all lawful means to clear his name as investigations into the allegations continue.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, he thanked his friends, relatives and well-wishers for standing by him amid the allegations.

He said he would focus his efforts and resources on clearing his name and defending his position.

“At this time, I intend to devote my attention and resources to pursuing all lawful avenues to clear my name and vindicate my position,” he stated.

Mr Abdulai also expressed hope that he would return to active political engagement after the matters had been resolved and continue contributing to the ideals of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The headmaster remains interdicted while investigations continue.

Mr Abdulai, who served as the NDC’s Juaben Constituency Secretary, has also resigned from the position and withdrawn his candidature for the constituency chairmanship election.

In a letter dated October 20, 2026, and addressed to the party’s General Secretary, he said both decisions took immediate effect.

“I write to formally notify you of my decision to resign from my position as the incumbent Secretary of the Juaben Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), with immediate effect.
